Torre Palazzone takes its name from the medieval tower, built in the 12th century as part of the outer-defences of Siena. This military history is still apparent today, from the crenellations visible at the top of the tower, to the curtain wall surrounding the landscaped courtyard – now the perfect place for lounging with friends. The tower remains the oldest part of the house, and includes the former chapel, now the sumptuous Nicchio suite, as well as the formal ‘salon’ – a grand first floor reception room that suggests local nobles also used the site as a hunting lodge.
Over the centuries the buildings and community grew, until it was a small village with accommodation for several families – and their animals! The beasts were kept in groundfloor stables, which is why there were no internal stairs from the ground to first floor, and there are mangiatoie, or eating troughs, in the entrance hall and downstairs reception rooms.
Torre Palazzone offers the perfect blend of privacy, tranquility and convenience. The villa is completely private, and yet only 400m from the road, with the popular village of Sovicille (with shops, cafes and a restaurant) just 5 minutes away by car, 10 minutes by bike or 30 minutes on foot. The medieval city of Siena, a world UNESCO heritage site, can be reached in just 20 minutes whilst historic Florence (and it’s convenient airport) are about an hours drive.
The grounds offer a wealth of beautiful areas to spend time with family and friends. The courtyard and the terrace are well-appointed with sofas and outdoor seating, whilst the shady pergola offers the perfect spot for ‘alfresco’ dining. The heated swimming pool has a separate shallow area perfect for children. It is surrounded by chic sun loungers in a charming location, with views over the medieval terraces to the fields and oak forest beyond.
The villa is nestled in the middle of a 40 acre estate, surrounded by protected national forests teeming with wildlife. Deer, hares, wild boar and even porcupines can all be spotted in the gardens, whilst birdwatchers should keep an eye out for jays, hoopoes and cuckoos. The party continues at night, with owls, nightingales and fireflies – not to mention the spectacular starry skies. Keen hikers and cyclists have plenty of choice of woodland trails direct from the property, whilst wild swimmers can explore the river Merse just a short drive away.
Torre Palazzone is also a working lavender and olive oil farm, with a colony of bees for honey and a large ‘orto’ or vegetable garden for our guests. Although we have only recently gained an official license as ‘biologico’ (organic), the fields have been pesticide free since at least the 1970s.
